Avoid in patients with clinical or laboratory evidence of hepatic disease. Excessive alcohol intake, acute or chronic. Acute or chronic metabolic acidosis, including diabetic ketoacidosis, with or without coma. 2 days before elective major surgery, and for 2 days following surgery or any traumatic condition. History of lactic acidosis. Lactation. Uncontrolled diabetes, with e.g. severe hyperglycemia, nausea, vomiting, dehydration, rapid weight loss. Impaired function of the heart or recent  heart attack, stroke. Blood clot in the lungs. Pancreas inflammation. Patients over 80 years old and not yet passed kidney function assessment. See lit.
