Iron Chelating Agent. Deferiprone 500 mg, 1000 mg. Tabs. 100/50
25 mg/kg BW, orally, X3/d (total daily dose of 75 mg/kg BW). Dose per kg BW should be calc. to the nearest 1/2 tab.
As monother. for the tmt of iron overload in pts > 6 years with thalassaemia major when current chelation ther. is contraind. or inadequate. In comb. with another chelator in pts with thalassaemia major when monother. with any iron chelator is ineffective, or when prevention or tmt of life-threatening consequences of iron overload (mainly cardiac overload) justifies rapid or intensive correction.
C/I: - Hypersens. – Hist. of recurrent episodes of neutropenia. – Hist. of agranulocytosis. - Pregn- Breast-feeding - Due to the unknown mechan. of deferiprone-induced neutropenia, pts. must not take medic. prod. known to be associated with neutropenia or that can cause agranulocytosis
