Dosage
25-50 mg daily in divided doses, increase to optimum level.
Sedation only: single dose of 12.5-25 mg.
Severe conditions: 50-75 mg daily in 2-3 doses, increase to desired effect.
Children: 0.25 mg/kg daily in 3 divided doses.

Indications
Anxiety, tension, behavioral disorders.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivty to phenothiazines, heart disease, coma. Patients receiving large doses of CNS depressants (barbiturates, alcohol, narcotics, analgesics, or antihistamines).
Special Precautions
Cross-sensitivity to phenothiazine derivatives may occur, tardive dyskinesia may develop in patients treated with neuroleptic (anti-psychotic) drugs. In patients who require chronic treatment, the smallest dose and the shortest duration of treatment to produce a satisfactory clinical response should be sought. Neuroleptic malignant syndrome (NMS). If a patient requires antipsychotic drug treatment after recovery from NMS, the potential reintroduction of drug therapy should be carefully considered. The patient should be closely monitored, since recurrences of NMS have been reported. Pregnancy and lactation. Patients on high dosages or extended treatment should undergo periodic examinations for blood cell count, because of the possible occurrence of blood dyscrasias. Liver function tests and urine tests. Ophthalmological examinations may be required at periodic intervals. Patients with a history of epilepsy, possible liver damage, abnormal thyroid function, glaucoma or prostatic hypertrophy. In patients exposed to extreme heat, organophosphorus insecticides, and receiving atropine or related drugs.
Side Effects
Extrapyramidal symptoms, drowsiness or lethargy. Autonomic reactions may occasionally occur. Adynamic ileus occasionally occurs. Postural hypotension, tachycardia, bradycardia, cardiac arrest, faintness, and dizziness, ECG changes, skin disorders. Routine blood counts are advisable during therapy. Liver damage, weight change, peripheral edema, abnormal lactation, gynecomastia, menstrual irregularities, false results on pregnancy tests, impotence in men, increased libido in women, pigmentation of the skin, ocular changes.
