    Indications

    Depression, anxiety (associated with depression).


    Contra-Indications

    Known hypersensitivity to tricyclic antidepressants. Concomitant administration with monoamine oxidase inhibitors, or within 14 days after their discontinuation. During the acute recovery phase following myocardial infarction.


    Special Precautions

    Pregnancy and lactation, pediatrics, manic depressive patients. Prescriptions should be written for the smallest quantity feasible. Cardiovascular disorders, blood pressure problems, should be cautioned against engaging in potentially hazardous occupations, elderly patients, history of urinary retention, angle-closure glaucoma, or increased intraocular pressure, when given with anticholinergic or sympathomimetic drugs, hyperthyroid patients, or those receiving thyroid medicdbation, history of seizure disorders. Tricyclic antidepressants may increase the hazards associated with electroshock therapy.


    Side Effects

    Dryness of the mouth, blurred vision, disturbances of accommodation, constipation, urinary retention and aggravation of angle-closure glaucoma, drowsiness, confusional states, hallucinations, disturbed concentration, peripheral neuropathy, fine tremor, seizures, extrapyramidal symptoms. Paradoxical reactions include anxiety and insomnia. Allergic skin reactions and photosensitivity, rare cases of agranulocytosis, leukopenia, leukocytosis, eosinophilia and thrombocytopenia, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, unpleasant taste, diarrhea, anorexia, cholestatic jaundice, testicular swelling and gynecomastia in the male, breast enlargement and galactorrhea in the female, increased or decreased libido, alopecia, edema, weight gain or loss, urinary frequency, increased perspiration, changes in blood glucose levels.


    Drug interactions

    MAOIs, directly acting sympathomimetics, antihypertensives, phenothiazines, anticholinergics, anticonvulsants. Alcohol, antihistamines, CNS depressants, benzodiazepines, opiate analgesics, cimetidine, phenytoin. Barbiturates, disulfiram, sublingual glyceryl trinitrate, thyroxine, acetazolamide. Zopiclone, high fibre diet, neuroleptics, SSRIs.
