Indications
Treatment of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women to prevent fractures, including those of the hip and spine (vertebral compression fractures).
Contra-Indications
Inability to stand or sit upright for at least 30 minutes, hypocalcemia, esophagus abnormalities, sensitivity to bisphosphonate. Not intended for use in children.

Special Precautions
To be taken at least half an hour before the first food, beverage, or medication of the day with a full glass of plain tap water only. Patients should not lie down for at least 30 minutes and until after their first food of the day. May cause local irritation of the upper gastrointestinal mucosa. Hypocalcemia and other disturbances of mineral metabolism (such as vitamin D deficiency) must be corrected before initiating therapy.
Pregnancy and lactation: Should be used during pregnancy only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the mother and fetus. Use with caution in nursing mothers.
Side Effects
Esophagitis, esophageal ulcers and esophageal erosions, occasionally with bleeding and rarely followed by esophageal stricture, dysphagia, odynophagia, retrosternal heartburn. Rare reports of gastric and duodenal ulcers.
Drug interactions
Estrogen, calcium supplements, antacids, NSAID’s, aspirin, Corticosteroids (e.g. Prednisone, Dexamethasone).
