Special Precautions
The efficacy for the treatment of infections caused by zoophilic dermatophytes (e.g. microsporum canis) has not been established. Should not be used in the treatment of: Facial rosea; acne vulgaris; perioral dermatitis; perianal and genital pruritus; napkin eruptions; bacterial or viral (i.e. herpes simplex) infections (concomitant therapy should be administered. If a favorable response does not occur promptly, treatment with this preparation should be discontinued until the infection has been controlled adequately); tubercular infections of the skin. Patients receiving a large dose of a potent topical steroid applied to a large surface area, should be evaluated periodically for evidence of HPA axis suppression by using the urinary free cortisol and ACTH simulation tests. Patients should be advised to report any signs of local adverse reactions. Pregnancy and lactation: Studies have not shown that clotrimazole causes adverse effects on the fetus, but the preparation should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk to the fetus, and such use should not be extensive. Caution should be exercised when this preparation is used by nursing women. Should not be applied to the breasts prior to nursing. See prescribing information for full details.
