Dosage
Unless otherwise directed the following dosage guidelines are recommended:
Adults and children over 12 years: Maintenance dose: Approximately 7.5 mg Metronidazole/kg body weight over one hour every 8 hours, corresponding to 100 ml (500 mg) Metronidazole injection for a 70 Kg adult.
Loading dose: 15 mg/kg infused over one hour (approximately 1 g for 70 kg adult): A maximum of 1.4 g should not be exceeded during 24 hours. Safety and effectiveness in children have not been established. In renal insufficiency the dose interval is to be extended to 12 hours.
In severe hepatic disease plasma metronidazole levels have to be monitored. The usually recommended dose may eventually have to be reduced.
Indications
Prophylaxis and treatment of anerobic bacteria and protozoa.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivity, 1st trimester pregnancy, patients with trichomonas.
