Indications
Short term treatment of insomnia.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivity, severe sleep apnea syndrome, acute repiratory insufficiency, psychiatric disturbances, severe hepatic insufficiency.
Special Precautions
Caution in patients showing symptoms of depression, minimum as possible amount of the drug should be supplied to the patient. Termination of treatment will be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms. The duration of hypnotic treatment should be as short as possible but should not exceed one month including tapering off period. Rebound insomnia may occur on withdrawal of hypnotic treatment. This may be accompanied by other reactions including mood changes, anxiety and restlessness. It is important that the patient be aware of the possibility of rebound phenomena. Sedation, amnesia and impaired muscular function may adversely affect the ability to drive or to use machines while taking hypnotics. Avoid use during pregnancy and lactation.
Side Effects
During hypnotic use: derealization, depersonalisation, hyperacusis, numbness, tingling of the extemities, hypersensitivity to light, noise and physical contact, hallucinations and epileptic seizures. Paradoxical reactions like restlessness, agitation, irritability, rages, hallucinations, may occur when using hypnotics.
