Tmt. of serious infect. caused by suscept. org. & also perioperat. for prophylaxis.
Tmt. Respir. tract infec. due to streptococcus pn.(formerly diplococcus p.) klebsiella species haemophilus influenzae staphylococcus a. (penicillin-sensit. & penicillin-resist.) and group A B – hemolyt. streptococci. Cefazolin is effect. in the eradic. of streptococci from the nasopharynx. However data establish. the efficacy of cefazolin in the subseq. prevent. of rheumat. fever are not available at present. Endocardit. caused by staphylococcus aureus: (penicillin-sensit.&penicillin-resis.) &gr. A beta-hemolytic streptococci. Appropriate culture and susceptib. studies should be performed to determine the susceptib. of the causative org. to cefazolin.
Perioperat. prophylaxis: The prophylactic admin. of cefazolin peri-operat. (preoperat. intra-operat.& postoperat.) may reduce the incidence of certain postoperat. infec. in pts. undergoing surgical proced. (e.g. hysterectomy GI surg. & transurethral prostatectomy) that are classified as contamin. or potent. contamin. The perioperat. use of cefazolin may also be effective in surg. pts. in whom infec. at the operat. site would present a serious risk (e.g. open-heart surg. & prosthetic arthroplasty).
C/I: Known hypersens. to cefazolin or other cephalosporins. Pts. who have prev. shown immed. and/or severe hypersens. reactions to penicillin or to any other beta-lactam antibiot.
