Adults: 500-1500 mg every 6-12 hs, depending on dis. severity and pathog. susceptib. Max 12 g /d.

Tmt. of serious infect. caused by susceptible organisms and also perioperatively for prophylaxis.
Respir. tract: infect. due to streptococcus pneumoniae (formerly diplococcus pneumoniae,) klebsiella species, haemophilus influenzae, staphylococcus aureus (penicillin-sensitive and penicillin-resistant) and group A B - hemolytic streptococci.
Cefazolin is effective in the eradic. of streptococci from the nasopharynx. However data establishing the efficacy of cefazolin in subsequent prevent. of rheumatic fever are not available at present.
Urinary tract: Infect. due to escherichia coli, klebsiella species, proteus mirabilis and some strains of Enterobacter and enterococci hemolytic beta.
Skin and skin structure: Infect. due to Staphylococcus aureus (penicillin-sensitive and penicillin-resistant,) group A streptococci and other strains of streptococci.
Biliary tract: Infect. due to escherichia coli, various strains of streptococci, proteus mirabilis, klebsiella species and staphylococcus aureus.
Bone and joint: Infect. due to staphylococcus aureus.
Genital infect. (i.e. prostatitis epididymitis) due to escherichia coli, proteus mirabilis, klebsiella species and some strains of enterococci.
Septicemia due to streptococcus pneumoniae (formerly diplococcus pneumoniae), staphylococcus aureus (penicillin-sensitive and penicillin-resistant,) proteus mirabilis escherichia coli and klebsiella species.
Endocarditis caused by staphylococcus aureus (penicillin-sensitive and penicillin-resistant) and group A beta-hemolytic streptococci.
Appropriate culture and suscept. studies should be performed to determine the suscept. of the causative organism to cefazolin.
Perioperative prophylaxis:
The prophylactic admin. of this drug may reduce the incidence of certain postoperative infect. in pts. undergoing surgical procedures (e.g. hysterectomy, GI surgery and transurethral prostatectomy) that are classified as contaminated or potent. contaminated.
The perioperative use of cefazolin may also be effective in surgical pts in whom infect. at the operative site would present a serious risk (e.g. open-heart surg. and prosthetic arthroplasty).
C/I: Hypersens. Hist. of previous immediate and/or sev. hypersens. reaction to a penicillin or to any other type of beta-lactam drug.
Hypersensitivity to lidocaine (I.M administration)
1st Generation Cephalosporins. Cefazolin as sodium 1000 mg/vial. VIAL (pwdr. for sol. for inj.): 10×10ml. The dosage depends on pathogen sensitiv. and the severity of the dis. See lit.

Endocardit. caused by staphylococcus aureus: (penicillin-sensit.&penicillin-resis.) &gr. A beta-hemolytic streptococci. Appropriate culture and susceptib. studies should be performed to determine the susceptib. of the causative org. to cefazolin.
Perioperat. prophylaxis: The prophylactic admin. of cefazolin peri-operat. (preoperat. intra-operat.& postoperat.) may reduce the incidence of certain postoperat. infec. in pts. undergoing surgical proced. (e.g. hysterectomy GI surg. & transurethral prostatectomy) that are classified as contamin. or potent. contamin. The perioperat. use of cefazolin may also be effective in surg. pts. in whom infec. at the operat. site would present a serious risk (e.g. open-heart surg. & prosthetic arthroplasty).
