Dosage
One tablet of 5 mg every night. After one month, the doctor may increase to 10 mg per day (to take at night).
The maximal dosage is 10 mg per day.
Indications
Mild to moderately severe Alzheimer’s dementia.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivity to components, or piperidine derivatives.
Special Precautions
Likely to exaggerate succinylcholine-type muscle relaxation during anesthesia, may have vagotonic effects on heart rate, in patients with “sick sinus syndrome” or other supraventricular cardiac conduction conditions. Patients should be monitored closely for symptoms of active or occult gastrointestinal bleeding.
Side Effects
Nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, vomiting, muscle cramp, fatigue and anorexia, often of mild intensity and transient.
Drug interactions
Phenytoin, carbamazepine, dexamethasone, rifampicin, phenobarbital.
