Dosage
Adults: One tablet 7.5 mg before going to sleep.
Elderly: The starting dosage is usually one tablet 3.75 mg before going to sleep. If needed can be increse to 7.5 mg.
Patients with liver, kidney, or breathing problems: The starting dosage is usually one 3.75 mg before going to sleep.
The duration of the treatment must be as short as possible and should not exceed a period of 4 weeks (including the tapering-off stage).
Discontinuation of the treatment will be performed gradually.
Indications
Insomnia.
Contra-Indications
Hypersensitivity to zopiclone, severe sleep apnoea syndrome, respiratory insufficiency, severe hepatic insufficiency, psychiatric disturbances.
Special Precautions
Chronic use of hypnotics may lead to the development of physical and psychic dependence of these products. Once physical dependence has developed, termination of treatment will be accompanied by withdrawal symptoms. The duration of hypnotic treatment should be as short as possible but should not exceed 1 month including tapering off period. It is important that the patient be aware of the possibility of rebound phenomena. Sedation, amnesia and impaired muscular function may adversely affect the ability to drive or to use machines while taking hypnotics. Avoid use in pregnant and lactating women.
Side Effects
Drowsiness during the day, numbed emotions, reduced alertness, confusion, fatigue, headache, dizziness, muscle weakness and ataxia, double vision with hypnotic therapy. Anterograde amnesia may occur using therapeutic dosages.
Drug interactions
Alcohol, antipsychotics, neuroleptics, other hypnotics, anxiolytics/sedatives, antidepressant agents, narcotic analgesics, antiepileptic drugs and anesthetics, cisapride, compounds which inhibit certain hepatic enzymes (particularly cytochrome P 450).
